An Air Force instructor pilot has tragically passed away after the ejection seat in his aircraft activated while on the ground, officials have confirmed

The incident occurred on Monday at Sheppard Air Force Base near Wichita Falls, Texas. Captain John Robertson, serving with the 80th Operational Support Squadron, was aboard a T-6A Texan II aircraft engaged in ground operations when the ejection seat unexpectedly activated, resulting in serious injuries, as detailed in a statement released by Sheppard Air Force Base on Tuesday.

Air Force authorities have announced plans to establish a full safety investigation board to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sadly, Robertson succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning, according to Air Force officials.
